Elizabeth Kenny joined the Program team as an intern for 5 month’s to gain some insight into the world of Marketing
During my second year of university, I had the absolute pleasure of completing a five-month internship at Astley Media (Program’s former name), where I was exposed to many exciting elements of the marketing, PR and communications sphere. This invaluable experience provided a fascinating introduction to the industry, guided by a supportive, dedicated and expert team. I began with a keen interest in learning more about business operations outside of the lecture theatre, but it was the individualised support I received from each team member that developed this into a love for the field. Working closely with different employees on different projects, everyone welcomed me warmly and took the time to ensure I was benefitting from the task and internship more broadly, and I now look forward to beginning a full-time work placement as a direct result of the skills and passion I’ve developed at Astley media.
I was provided with a wide variety of learning opportunities and projects that helped to develop my skills. One notable highlight was working on preparing for the Tech South West awards, which was a fascinating introduction to events marketing and a brilliant way to learn more about the thriving tech sector in our region. Other notable projects included writing the interview questions for a blog on Esports ahead of the hugely successful South West Esports festival, in which I learned more about the growing industry from team leaders including England rugby player Don Armand. This was an amazing opportunity to improve written fluency, professionalism and build connections and is one of my proudest achievements. Other highlights include conducting an interview with Astley Media CEO Marc Astley about the first issue of the Exeter Magazine, spreading awareness of festive charity events through social media channels and researching locally sourced Christmas gifts for clients.
Each blog, tweet and press release taught me something new and I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work on every project. I received thoughtful and clear feedback on all of my work from multiple people across the team, which had a notable impact on my written fluency and ability to work independently. My line manager Leah ensured I had both an enjoyable and informative experience, keeping in regular contact and targeting my tasks towards the areas I was most interested in learning more about. The whole team were also extremely accommodating, helping me to fit around my university work and supporting my external internship funding application, and on in-office days everyone was really friendly and approachable. It is exactly the kind of workplace I would enjoy being a part of in the future as it develops and continues to specialise in the booming tech industry.
